Shepherdstown, WV - Shepherd University Friends of Music will open its 2010 - 2011 season on Saturday, September 18 with a concert by the renowned Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, sponsored by KINEXUM. The curtain goes up at 8:00 PM at the Frank Center on the campus of Shepherd University.
Now in its fourth season, the FOM Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra continues to gain wide critical acclaim throughout the region. “The community’s enthusiastic response to our orchestra is gratifying but not surprising,“ said FOM Board President, Neal Barkus. “This region is as rich in culture as any in the country.“
“The September concert gives the orchestra an opportunity to show the audience a deep passion for the most beautiful music ever written for our medium. Performing Albinoni to Dvorák in a single concert spans several hundred years of great orchestral music. This variety and excitement is not to be missed.” Said Dr. Mark McCoy, orchestra conductor and chair of the SU Department of Music.
Highlights of the concert include the incomparable Haydn "Farewell" Symphony, the blisteringly up-tempo "Ruslan and Ludmila" Overture and the spirited Slavonic Dances of Dvorák and a beautiful concerto for Oboe by Tomaso Albinoni featuring Shepherd
principal oboist, Greg Shook.
Major sponsors of the FOM concert season are KINEXUM, Lynchpin BioMedia, Bowles Rice, BB&T of Martinsburg, Jefferson Security Bank of Shepherdstown.
On October 5, 2010 Manuel Barrueco, the internationally known classical guitarist will bring his unique artistry to the Frank Center stage. Barrueco has performed across the United Sates from the Los Angeles Philharmonic to New York’s Lincoln Center. This concert, sponsored by Lynchpin BioMedia, is the second in the 2010-2011 FOM concert series.
On Friday, September 17, the public is cordially invited to the “Lunch with Friends” at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown. Dr. Mark McCoy, chairman of the SU Dept. of Music and conductor of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, will present highlights of the upcoming concert.
