Shepherdstown, WV - The Vienna Boys Choir will be performing on Tuesday, October 27 at the Shepherd University Frank Center as a highlight of the Friends of Music 2009-10 concert series.  “We are very fortunate to have coaxed the Vienna Boys Choir to Shepherdstown, said Dr. Mark McCoy, chairman of Shepherd’s Department of Music, “it is the best known boys’ choir in the world.  The curtain goes up at 8:00 PM.

The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world. A founding document of Maximilian I in 1498 called the first dozen boys to the imperial court as members of the newly formed court music band. Since then the Vienna Boys' Choir has been a fixed attraction in Austrian musical life.

A number of famous musicians emerged from its ranks, including Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Georg Boyer, Benedikt Randhartinger, Hans Richter, Karl Zeller and Josef Sucher. These greats and many others are former members of the Choir. It is said that the Vienna Boys’ Choir helped to write the musical history of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The curtain goes up at the Frank Center on the campus of Shepherd University at 8:00 pm. The major sponsor of the evening is Kinexum and Exsulin, "partners in the fight against diabetes" of Harpers Ferry.
